The sound of water cascading over a weir, the scent of flowering plants, birdsong, and the shifting chorus of insects that changes with each season, these are the things that make a stay at this hillside retreat complete. The owner, whose love of trees and fragrant plants runs deep, wanted a home that connects genuinely with nature and offers what city life rarely can.
A new shaded veranda and courtyard form the heart of the design, offering spaces equally suited to quiet contemplation and convivial gatherings. This expansion doubles the footprint of the original interior, with the veranda connecting seamlessly with the rooms within. Closed, with its folding glass doors drawn shut, it becomes a generous living hall. Opened fully, it transforms into an airy pavilion that welcomes the breeze and the fragrance of the garden.
An eastern courtyard flows from the veranda down toward the waterside, its surfaces woven between existing trees and planting. The main stairway meanders through dappled shade and gentle gradients, with flowering shrubs lining both sides. At the entrance, a buhnga sari (Florida fiddlewood) — an auspicious tree bearing clusters of white, sweetly scented flowers — greets visitors alongside the Wild Himalayan Cherry, a beloved native tree whose soft pink blossoms draw admirers when it blooms.
Floors, ceilings, and walls throughout are finished in teak, quietly contemporary yet warm. Inside, the garden's softness carries through in natural tones, fabric-textured surfaces, and considered details in the chandeliers and door handles. Dark timber upper walls and white-plastered lower walls with decorative mouldings give the house the character of a Lanna colonial residence, sitting comfortably within its surroundings.
