OFFICE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL - INTERNAL AUDIT, ROYAL THAI POLICE

Ram-indra Road, Bangkok
Thailand
2009

This design competition brief called for a new home for two divisions of the Royal Thai Police, the Office of the Inspector General and the Internal Audit Division, relocating from Pathumwan to Rama Indra Road. The design was guided by a clear ambition: to elevate the standard of government architecture through a building that is beautiful, low-maintenance, and unmistakably reflective of the Royal Thai Police's institutional identity.

The design concept is rooted in tropical climate-responsive principles. Large openings on the east and west elevations are minimised, with windows oriented predominantly north and south. Sunshading devices reduce direct heat gain, and mature trees are strategically positioned along the western facade as a natural thermal buffer, together creating a building that is energy-conscious without compromising on character.

Institutionally, the building is expressed through a contemporary architectural language that carries subtle organisational symbolism, most notably in the building's colour palette of khaki and deep red, a quiet but deliberate reference to the uniform of the Royal Thai Police.

The two divisions are housed in two distinct buildings, clearly delineating their respective areas while sharing a landscaped central courtyard that brings greenery and calm to the heart of the complex. Parking is positioned separately, for security reasons, along the main road frontage, woven between rows of trees that provide shade and act as a natural screen. Wherever possible, existing mature trees on the site have been retained, reinforcing the shaded, considered atmosphere that defines the project as a whole.
