As a university which emphasizes creative learning, the
design of the Center for Cinematic and Digital Arts expresses this mission
through the liberal application of bold colors aimed at giving its students a
sense of excitement and positive energy.
Striking red finish on the surfaces of the canopy, semi
outdoor hallway and main stairway draws users into the building. Within, the floor
plan is laid out following the sequence of different stages of film and
animation production in a loop that terminates at the theater.
The front façade clearly articulates the interplay of
positive and negative spaces, and the juxtaposition between the muted exterior
and the vividly colorful interior finish.
The exterior wall of the theater forms part of the front façade
and is sliced into slivers with painted edges which protrude at various angles
to create a wave-like form. In doing so, the building is given a sense of depth
and movement in addition to a playful three-dimensional representation of the
art of animation.
