“Laugh Alive Pavilion”
is an information center, meeting point, and gateway to the Bangkok Design Week
2020 under the theme “Resilience: New Potential for Living”.
This pavilion reflects
Thai people’s remarkable resilience and ability to adapt in the face of
obstacles. Positivity is the essence that gets us through challenging crises,
and resilience enables humans to endure and survive in our environment. A
silver lining can be found in any cloud through “humor and positive energy”.
“Generating
Happiness” through balloons used
to symbolize liveliness and serve to buoy up the “Laugh Alive Pavilion” shading
canopy. The height of the pavilion acts as a gauge of visitors’ happiness
levels, collected through interactive media developed by Bit.Studio which detects
laughter. As happiness is generated within the pavilion, balloons are added,
and the canopy floats higher. The shape of the pavilion is ever-changing due to
the number of balloons and the wind flow, reflecting the unfettered nature of
laughter and happiness.
“Spreading
Happiness” as
the canopy is designed to be durable yet easily disassembled. Balloons are
given out to visitors at the end of each day. The colorful canopy composed of
circular bags fabricated by Moreloop from offcut garment fabric, is dismantled
on site on the final day and cloth bags are distributed to the visitors.
Outdoor furniture is made from repurposed rubber inner tubes covered by custom
designed Moreloop fabric and are returned to be enjoyed at Bangsan beach.
Creative collaboration
achieves the goal of zero-waste, and after the 9-day event, all that remains of
the LAUGH ALIVE PAVILION are countless fun memories, joy and laughter.
