MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Sri Ayudhya Road, Bangkok
Thailand
1999
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is situated onSri Ayudhya Road where the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (or SEATO) headquarters was located. It is the new home office for the Thai diplomatic corporation and also serves an important role as a reception center for visiting heads os state and foreign government officials, as well as hosting international conferences. The expression of Thai characteristics and symbols has been carefully executed. The spirit of Baan Thai (Thai house) space is the concept behind grouping the buildings around a variety of courts. The reception buildings are placed around the main one with a crystal lotus pond, the lotus being the symbolic flower of purity in the Buddhist religion. It is also the ministrys formal badge, reflecting its good governance. In thecenter stands the grand ceremonial hall (Vithes Samosorn, the name given by the king at the grand opening in 1999). Similarly, all office building blocks are located around smaller garden courts to maximize natural light and ventilation. The interior space is well lit and reflects the same architectural theme. Each block and floor represents different departments and subdivisions, connected by corridors and bridges over the garden court.
